Abstract |
Objective The graft infection after cranioplasty may be critical in old age population and often lead to reoperation.
We analyzed the incidence of cranioplasty related graft infection and affecting factors in the patients aged over
65 Years, retrospectively.
Methods We enrolled 48 patients aged over 65 years whom had undergone cranioplasty at our department between
November 2003 and December 2013. We reviewed the patient’s medical charts, operative reports, and images before
and after cranioplasty were reviewed. Reasons for craniectomy, underlying diseases, the interval between craniectomy
and cranioplasty (ICC), Glasgow coma scale (GCS) before cranioplasty, preoperative subgaleal fluid collection,
graft material, operation time were also analyzed in detail, retrospectively.
Results Cranioplasty related graft infection occurred in 4 patients (8.3%). The graft infections after cranioplasty were
related to preoperative subgaleal fluid collection (p=0.003), ICC(p=0.043), significantly. Other factors, such as reasons
for craniectomies, underlying diseases, GCS before cranioplasty, graft material, operation time did not alter the infection
rate.
Conclusion Our study suggests that preoperative subgaleal fluid collection and the short interval between craniectomy
and cranioplasty might increase possibility of graft infection after cranioplasty in the elderly patients. |
