Abstract |
Objective Chronic subdural hematoma is a common intracranial pathology. Especially elderly peoples are affected. The purpose of this paper
is to evaluate the prognosis and peri-operative risks in elderly patients with chronic subdural hematoma.
Methods We enrolled 241 chronic subdural hematoma patients aged over 65 years treated at our department between 2006 and 2012. We reviewed
the patient’s prognosis, peri-operative risks, recurrence rate and other factors such as therapy with anti-coagulants and concomitant diseases.
The surgical procedure was performed with burr-hole drainage. The prognosis was classified with Karnofsky performance status. Patients
were devided into three groups with age (group I: age 65-73 years, group II: age 74-82 years. Group III: age 83-91 years).
Results Total 241 patients underwent burr hole drainage for chronic subdural hematoma. The mean age was 75.8 years. After surgery, the mean
neurological/functional status improved in all three groups. The recurrence rate did not show significantly different between the groups. The
complication rates and peri-operative mortality also were not significantly different between the groups.
Conclusion With the data of the current study, it seemed to be safe the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma in elderly patients. The
recognitionand attention to prevent peri-operative complicationsassociated with poor outcome may improve the benefit forpatients with chronic
subdural hematoma, especially in the elderly population. |
