Abstract |
Objective Surgery of the elderly patients is often a very difficult challenge for neurosurgeon. General health, sociofamilialand mental condition of the patients as well as the surgical techniques and postoperative management are to be accurately evaluated and planned. We retrospectively examine the clinical features of geriatric patients over than 75 years old, comparing with over than 80 years old.
Methods From March 2007 to September 2010, 453 patients aged more than 75 years old patient were enrolled in this study.Patients were divided into two groups. Group A included all patients who were between 75 and 79years of age at the time of surgery. Group B inclu ded all patients who were at least 80 years of age at the time of surgery. Their clinical features according to age group were analyzed according to etiology of disease. And retrospective analysis was performed about anesthetic method and status according to age groups.
Results Group A was 305 patients and Group B was 148 patients. Among the Group A, 117 patients had operation (37.3%), and general surgery was performed in 77% of operation group. In Group B, operation was performed in 77 patients (52%), and general surgery was 55.8%. Trauma including chronic subdural hemorrhage and epidural or subdural hemorrhage was most frequent cause of general operation in both groups, however, tumor, spine, functional surgeries were more frequent in Group A. Emergency operation rate was often in both groups, and palliative surgery more frequent in Group B.
Conclusion Aurthors reviewed the clinical features of relatively elderly group. Traumatic etiology was frequently seen, and emergency and palliative surgery is more frequently performed in patients who were at least 80 years of age. |
