Abstract |
Objective As elderly population grows rapidly and diagnostic tools become more advanced, carotid arterial stenosis, is becoming one of the popular protectable disease in neurosurgical field. The purpose of this paper is to study the effectiveness of carotid artery stenting in aged patients.
Methods Fourty carotid artery stenting in 37 patients aged over 65 years are enrolled in this study from June of 2000 to June of 2008. Patients were reviewed for demographic characteristics, radiologic characteristics of the carotid artery, technical characteristics and complications.
Results Technical success was achieved in 39 cases (97.5%) and there were no mortality. Three of the patients encountered complications after the procedures, which were, one minor stroke, one major stroke (intracerebral hemorrhage) and one restenosis.
Conclusion In comparison to other published studies, our results suggest that carotid artery stenting is a safe and satisfactory procedure for the elderly patients. |
