Abstract |
Spontaneous unruptured aneurysm regression is a very rare phenomenon. We present a case of an unruptured middle cerebral artery(MCA) aneurysm that disappeared after preceding coil embolization of a larger concurrent internal carotid (ICA) aneurysm. A 67-year-old woman presented with two incidental aneurysms located on the right distal-ICA and the bifurcation of the right MCA. There was no evidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage on magnetic resonance images. She was treated with coil embolization of the larger ICA aneurysm. Treatment of the smaller MCA aneurysm was postponed because the size of the aneurysm was regarded as having a low risk for rupture. A follow-up diagnostic angiography to assess the state of the coiled and untreated aneurysms was performed 44 months later. The angiography revealed complete regression of the MCA aneurysm. Hemodynamic alterations caused by the endovascular procedure may have influenced this phenomenon. Close follow-up with radiological images should be performed because the aneurysms may recanalize or regrow. |
