Abstract |
Objective The purpose of this study was to compare effect of the caudal epidural block with that of selective nerve root block for elderly patients with lumbar disc herniation. Methods: Fifty patients were treated caudal epidural block and selective nerve root block for lumbar radiculopathy by herniated of intervertebral disc between April 2017 and December 2018 in our hospital. 25 patients were treated by caudal epidural block(Group A) and 25 patients were treated by selective nerve root block(Group B). We investigated visual analog scale(VAS) at just before and 2 weeks after procedure. Results: Mean age of group A was 56.7(21-89) years and group B was 63.2(49-78) years. The difference of VAS before and after procedure was 2.88 in group A, and 3.36 in group B. In terms of age, the difference of VAS in elderly patients was 0.75, that in younger patients was 1.62. From the aspect of pain, the difference of VAS in back pain was 1.83, that in radiating pain was 0.76. Conclusion: Caudal epidural block and selective nerve root block are convenient and safe procedures. There was no significant difference in effect between the two procedures in this study. We recommend that surgeons consider more preferred procedure between two procedures for non-surgical treatment of lumbar radiculopathy patients with lumbar disc herniation. |
