Abstract |
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the patients’ age and other clinical variables in patients with medically refractory cerebral vasospasm(CV) following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
Methods During the 36 months between January 2011 and December 2013, 275 patients were treated at our institute for SAH due to a ruptured intracranial aneurysm. Among 275 patients, 26 patients (9.5%) met the inclusion criteria. Of the 26 patients, 14 were younger than 50 years-old and 12 were older than 50 years-old. For each patient treated with intra-arterial nimodipine infusion, a retrospective review of medical records was conducted.
Results Younger patients had 2.9±1.2 vasospasm segment and older patients had 2.0±0.7 vasospasm segment (p=0.046). Younger patients had 4.6±0.6 GOS scores and older patients had 3.6±1.3 GOS scores at 3 months (p=0.022). There was no significant difference in mean middle cerebral artery velocities on transcranial Doppler ultrasound (p=0.393), angiographic response after angioplasty (p=0.867) and need for repetitive angioplasty (p=0.462) according to patients’ age.
Conclusion Older age was not associated with a wide extent of vasospasm in patients with medically refractory cerebral vasospasm(CV). However, older patients had poorer GOS scores at 3 months than younger patients. |
