Abstract |
Objective The purpose of this study is to assess influencing factors on the clinical outcome and quality of life after
surgical treatment of chronic subdural hematoma in elderly.
Methods A series of 50 patients aged 65 and over with chronic subdural hematoma was reviewed. Hematomas
were surgically removed in all patients. We analyzed possible influencing factors on the clinical outcome and quality
of life such as, age, sex, causes, recurrence, and preoperative limb weakness, underlying disease. In this paper, the
surveys which are the barthel index, modified Rankin Score (mRS), and The Short Form(36) Health Survey (SF-36)
are used to assess for quality of life. These surveys are conducted twice before surgery and 1 year after surgery.
Results One year after surgery, the barthel index increased 2.78 points, mRS decreased 0.54 points, and SF-36
increased 2.48 points. In univariate analysis, the factors, which affected the barthel index, mRS, and SF-36 respectively,
were age, trauma history, and weakness (p<0.05). However, the most important factors which affected the
outcome and quality of life was old age in multivariate analysis (p<0.05).
Conclusion According to our study, the most important factor which influenced the outcome and quality of life was
old age, especially over 80. |
