Abstract
Objective
Pituitary adenomas produce adverse symptoms by compression of adjacent cranial nerves, brain, and/or hypersecretion of hormones. We assess the effect of the Gamma Knife radiosurgery for pituitary adenomas in geriatric ages.
Methods
Thirteen geriatric pituitary adenoma patients were treated with Gamma knife radiosurgery from November 1994 to December 2011. There were 2 cases of prolactinoma, 3 cases of growth hormone secreting adenoma, 8 cases of non-functioning adenoma. 2 cases underwent transsphenoidal resective operation. The mean tumor volume was 5.4 cc and the mean marginal dose was 14.3 Gy and the mean matimal dose was 26.2 Gy, the mean follow-up period was 28.6 months with range from 12 months to 67 months.
Results
On follow-up magnetic resonance imaging study after Gamma knife surgery, 10 cases showed reduction in size, 3 cases showed no change in size. In the hormonal result, 2 cases of 2 prolactiomas patients had decreased prolactin hypersecretion, and 2 case out of 3 acromegalic patient had decreased growth hormone hypersecretion and 1 case shows clinical cure. There was no complications.
Conclusion
Gamma knife radiosurgery can be effective and safe method for the treatment of geriatric pituitary adenoma.
