The Prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia of Community Elderly

Abstract
Objective
The purpose of this study is to evaluate prevalence of mild cognitive impairment and dementia of community elderly.
Methods
February 9th 2010, In Iksan citizen vascular day, 84 peoples participated our study. Cognitive function was evaluated with Korean Mini- Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). Lipid profile, homocysteine, folate, vitamin B12 was measured. History of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, alcohol, smoking was interviewed.
Results
The average age of patients was 70.7 years and there were slightly more males than females (ratio, 1.05:1). Their mean K-MMSE score was 24.4. Prevalence of dementia was 7.1% and prevalence of mild cognitive impairment was 21.4%. Homocysteine was significant correlation with K-MMSE.
Conclusions
This study suggested that prevalence of mild cognitive impairment and dementia in community elderly was similar than previous studies. Adequate medical and neurological assessment and treatment for aged is necessary.
